Life
Lessons on the Road
By Lucy Britten When we are on the road for days at a time, and we've talked about all we can think of, read all of the books and magazines we have, listened to our whole CD collection, what is there left to do but mess about and be as silly as possible!! At a road stop, I bought a bag of chips and back out on the road I began playing with my food. The whole gang joined in we started seeing ways to create characters out of the chips. This is where Mr. Elvis the worm was created (you had to be there to appreciate it!!!) We had our fun with our creation, got bored and ate him! Now you may be thinking, 'what has Mr. Elvis worm got to do with God?' Well, after I ate him we talked about how that was a moment in life that will never be repeated, poor Mr. Elvis worm will never exist again! In a similar way, God wants us to grasp hold of every moment or opportunity as if it was our last. This doesn't mean that we are irresponsible in the things we do, because everything has a consequence. But what it does mean is that God wants us to enjoy and get the most out of the awesome life He's given us, which will lead to the most amazing place, heaven forever. It says in the Bible that we should be constantly looking heavenward at what God has promised us eternally. "So we fix our eyes not on what is seen but what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal" (2 Corinthians. 4:18) Now, I don't believe this means we strain our necks looking to the sky all the time. But it means God wants us to keep life in perspective, remember that all the cool stuff that you own and your looks will break and fade...Jesus, and what He has prepared for us after we die, will not!! "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy...but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven where moth and rust do not destroy" (Matt. 6:19-20). We can also relate this to our day to day treatment of people. If our life is only a short stay on earth in God's eyes, why not spend that time making other people happy! A smile or kind word costs nothing at all, but may mean the difference between making or breaking someone's day. I think it helps to think "if this was my last week on earth, what would I want to leave in the heart's of people around me, love or bitterness?" How will you spend today? |
